The Chakacha Dance

Updated: Mar 1, 2019

The chakacha dance is a very sensual-hip-swaying dance Swahili culture dance I learnt growing up in Kenya because it is the most sensual dance I know of beyond my geographical boundaries. Once you have rolled up your leso or khanga, you got to tie it strategically around the waist & hip area. Through this process, you have to figure out where it works best for your body to allow you to be comfortable enough to wine your waist away effortlessly.

By this point, your facial muscles need to be as relaxed as possible because your best result is evident when you are relaxed. Once you are ready to #KataKata, you can proceed to wine, and wine, and wine again slowly and carefully without causing any more harm. The wining ideally should happen in a circular balanced rhythm so that you are not focusing or taking longer on the left, right or center hip because it’s got move and flow with an equal balance. If you have great hip and waist coordination like the belly dancers or sega dancers , you should catch this quicker than most people would. And If the boy’s aint screaming uuuiiiiw, try again.

Besides a little influence from a few Swahili friends from school, I grew up with Swahili neighbours who played a big role in my influences and love for the Swahili culture . I pierced my nose, started getting my henna done, even wore the hijab occasionally and definitely learnt the chakacha dance which drew me even closer to the #Swahilivibes.

From the food, to the art, across to their dance, music and everything about the Swahili culture today, I am still so fascinated!
